Northern Railway Extending Rail Services In Kashmir Valley
Northern Railway realized another landmark achievement by extending rail services in the Kashmir Valley this morning by commencing rail services between Anantnag and Qazigund of the Qazigund-Baramula rail project. Hon’ble Prime Minister of India Dr. Manmohan Singh dedicated the rail section to the nation at a ceremonial function at Anantnag and flagged off the inaugural run of the DEMU train from Anantnag railway station in the august presence of Smt. Sonia Gandhi, Hon’ble Chairperson, United Progressive Alliance, Sh. N.N.Vohra, Hon’ble Governor, Jammu & Kashmir, Sh. Omar Abdullah, Hon’ble Chief Minister, Jammu & Kashmir and Mamata Banerjee, Hon’ble Minister for Railways. Smt Sonia Gandhi also released a Coffee Table Book-Linking Kashmir- featuring the history and evolution of the rail network in the Kashmir valley on the occasion. Girls of Oxford High School presented a colourful cultural performance.
The Anantnag- Quazigund Section of the Qazigund-Srinagar-Baramula Section inaugurated today spans 18.359 Km. The section has two stations -Sadura and Qazigund with 16 major bridges and 113 minor bridges. The speed potential of this rail section is 100 Kmph.
The Qazigund-Baramula rail section is part of the Jammu-Udhampur-Katra- Qazigund-Baramula link also known as the JUSBRL Project. It has 62 major and 739 minor bridges. There are 15 stations on this line and passenger amenities have been provided at all of them. The station buildings have been aesthetically designed in line with local architecture. 5 pairs of DEMU services run on the Qazigund-Anantnag section of which 1 pair will run between Baramulla and Budgam and two pairs between Budgam and Qazigund.
Speaking on the occasion Hon’ble Minister for Railways, Mamata Banerjee said that as stated in the budget, Duronto train will be shortly commenced between Jammu Tawi and New Delhi; Super-fast trains between Jammu Tawi and Mysore will be introduced. She stated that railway recruitment exams would be held in Urdu language. Concessions would also be provided to students of Madarasas and fee concessions for recruitment exams to minority students.
